 Frequently Asked Questions

What is Jiu Jitsu?

Jiu Jitsu literally translates from Japanese to mean "The Gentle Art".  The Gracie family became world famous by showing and proving to the world, especially the Japanese people, how they have improved this ancient form of self-defense.  Gracie Jiu Jitsu is now known as the most effective form of self-defense man has invented.

How does the Program work?

Our method begins with a Basic Fundamental Course. The Students are monitored over a 50 lesson course which gives them a better understanding of the basic moves and position in Jiu Jitsu. We work with the human being's instinctual reaction against any kind of aggression or physical confrontation. You will be able to have the confidence and competence to deal with any person or situation that challenges you. No two lessons are the same; it’s a new challenge every time you come in for your lesson. Upon completion of your 50 lessons, you will develop an automatic survival response and you will have learned simple techniques that will stay with you the rest of your life. Of course, you have to hope to never have to use it. We not only give you the “power” but how to control it. If one day someone tries to catch you by surprise, you will automatically react with precision to control your emotions, fears, and impulses, then control your opponent/attacker and make them give up...the gentle way!

After the 50 lessons is the next phase of perfection and specialization of street fighting techniques and scenarios. You increase your mind power, alertness, problem-solving and improvisational skills.

Lessons are individualized and advancement is monitored by each student’s knowledge of the techniques and how well they absorb the meaning behind them. No previous knowledge, experience, or physical condition is required; anyone can learn our system from as early as age 7 to over 60.

What is the difference between japanese and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

There are numerous differences the main one being BJJ focuses more on ground grappling while Classical Jiu-Jitsu places a greater emphasis on standing grappling and striking.

How are Classes structured?

Most schools begin with a warm up of stretching and calisthenics, then a series of grappling related drills, followed by technique instruction, and finally a long period of sparing (also known as rolling).

Is Jiu Jitsu beneficial for women?

Jiu-Jitsu is excellent for rape prevention and other forms of self-defense necessary for women.  Also, since Jiu-Jitsu was designed for smaller people women will not find their lack of size a hindrance.

Why does JiuJitsu focus on ground fighting?

First of all, it is a fact that nearly all-real fights will go to the ground.  Also, BJJ always prepares its fighters for a physically superior opponent, someone much bigger and stronger.  Striking with a larger opponent is very dangerous, when on the feet the utilize leverage to his advantage and instead must try to match strength.  On the ground leverage can be used to control and submit even the largest of foes.  It has been proven time and again that if you can't fight on the ground then you can't fight.
